America emitted a collective gasp during tonight’s “Men Tell All” special of The Bachelorette when Andrew Poole mixed up the names of his (both African American) co-contestants, Marquel Martin and Ron Worrell. Even worse? He was in the middle of defending himself against allegations of racism. Woof.

The situation came up when Chris Harrison brought up the Season 10 incident, where JJ O’Brien told Marquel that Andrew had referred to him and Ron as “blackies” during the first rose ceremony. Ever the gentleman, Marquel confronted Andrew at the time, but kept his cool and took his denial at face value — whether or not he believed it.

Months later, this is a choice the sponsorship salesman stands by, and his handling of the situation earned him applause during the episode from Ron. But it was what happened right after that props was given, that it got weird.

“I completely agree with the way that Ron approached this conversation,” Andrew piped in, sticking his foot DIRECTLY into his mouth.

Marquel looked rightly shocked, as did the rest of the audience (our jaw is still on our floor), though he quickly recovered and corrected Andrew with his real name. Still, the damage was done to Andrew’s credibility, whether or not it was a genuine mistake.

After that, the controversial tech whiz (who also received heat during this season after he allegedly exchanged numbers with a waitress), tried to focus the blame onto JJ, who he said “had an agenda.” But then Host Harrison, private eye, busts out a clip that showed Andrew whispering something to JJ in that very moment that Ron got the rose. Though it obviously looked damning, we will likely never know exactly what was said.

So what does Marquel believe now? “I’m not here to play detective… I can’t get to the bottom of this, because I wasn’t there. I call JJ my friend, so I’m going to take his word.”

What do you think of Andrew’s terrible mix up? Do you think it was just bad timing or what? Tell us in the comments below.
