Our hearts swelled for Jef Holm, and then they broke for Arie Luyendyk, Jr. — he didn’t even get a final date before Bachelorette Emily Maynard called it quits. So that means that he’s front and center for becoming the next Bachelor, and we have five reason we think he’d be perfect.

1. He’s got the Ben Flajnik effect.
For all his quirks, when Ben proposed to Ashley Hebert in The Bachelorette Season 7 Finale, his sympathy points skyrocketed. How can you not melt over someone who’s endured true heartbreak on national TV? Arie has sympathy on his side — and those blue eyes don’t hurt either.

2.  He’s got a sense of humor — even about The Bachelorette.
All season long Arie has kept us laughing, and a sense of humor is indispensible when it comes not just to getting through dating on reality TV, but also love in general. Bonus: Arie would be as entertaining to watch every week as he would be to swoon over. We don’t need another Jake Pevelka, you guys.

3. He opened himself up to love.
From his first moments on The Bachelorette, Arie really put himself out there — and there’s really no other way to approach the process if you really want it to work. At Emily’s urging, he kept a journal of his whole Bachelorette experience, a journal which he then flew to Charlotte to deliver to her doorstep! This guy’s a classic romantic. Even driving away after his shocking heartbreak, he says, “I’m so loving. I’m an open person.” While it makes him vulnerable, we also think that would make him a perfect Bachelor.

4. He’s been there.
Understanding what it feels like to be dumped on national TV means that Arie would be sensitive to the pain that contestants would experience. A good Bachelor has to have suffered the blows in order to send others home with respect. He’s now a card-carrying member of the club.

5. He’s a Fan Favorite!
Team Arie is no joke. He’s got a fan following that would ensure him a very popular season as The Bachelor — and we’re thinking no shortage of eager applicants. (Where do we line up?)
