Credit: Give Bones

You guys— Kalon McMahon is a total softie. Sure, he’s still the guy who referred to Emily Maynard’s daughter as “baggage” — but, while step parenting may not be his thing, dogs sure are. Since wrapping Bachelorette in the spring and Bachelor Pad this summer, the Houston native has since relocated to LA, where he helped found the company Givebones. For every dog product sold, ten percent of profits go towards animal charities and causes. Kalon spoke to Wetpaint Entertainment about his passion for the pooches.

How did Givebones first come about?
After I was done filming Bachelor Pad, I stayed in LA for a bit and ended up talking to one of my friend’s wives who first had the idea for Givebones. Her husband works for Toms and she wanted to set up a company with a similar business model — one that gives back. Back in Houston, I worked at a consulting firm that helped startup companies and I said I’d like to help them out while I’m down here. 

And it’s since turned into a full-time gig?
Now I’m based here, yes, in Manhattan Beach. I go back to Houston for holidays and to see family. 

So what is Givebones all about?
Essentially, we’re selling collars and other dog products online and ten percent will go to a different shelter every month. This month, we’re working with the LA ASPCA. We hope to be able to help shelters not just in California, but in every state. 

You just had an online contest and the winner’s dog got a personal walk from you. How’d that idea come about?
We’re trying to find fun ways to get people involved. We’re growing the company organically so we’re trying to utilize my followers and followers of Bachelor Nation to help build us up and make the brand cool and fun.  

A lot of members of Bachelor Nation seem to use the platform to help their careers or to further a cause close to your heart…
Yeah, it’s a very effective vehicle if used correctly. People who follow the shows, they want to know what you’re doing and why it’s something close to your heart. And oftentimes, they want to help which is great. 

And you’re officially launching soon, correct?
Yes, we officially launch Nov. 15. We’re having a party with this month’s partner, the LA ASPCA on at the Santa Monica Pier. Anyone in the area is welcome to come.
