After getting his heart broken by Emily Maynard, Bachelorette runner-up Arie Luyendyk, Jr. confessed on the “After the Final Rose” special that he flew to Charlotte to talk with Emily to get some off-camera closure.

However, once he arrived in Emily’s hometown, he thought better of confronting her face-to-face, citing his respect for Bachelorette winner — and bestie — Jef Holm as a main reason. Instead he called her on the phone, and in a Lloyd Dobler-esque move, ultimately decided to leave the journal that Emily urged him to keep during his filming of The Bachelorette on her doorstep. Arie, we raise our boomboxes in salute.

But — also out of respect for Jef, Emily chose not to read it! She returned it — unopened — to Arie during the “After the Final Rose” special. Arie revealed there that he talks with Jef regularly, and the more he learned about the depth of Emily and Jef’s connection, the more he understood the reasons behind Emily’s decision to send him home in Curacao — reasons that Emily failed to fully explain at the time.

We’re so glad that Arie finally got closure — but, wow, do we really want to read that journal!
