In The Bachelorette Season 8, Episode 5, Emily Maynard blows up at Kalon McMahon for calling her daughter “baggage.” In a recent press call with reporters, Sean Lowe sheds light on the brewing confrontation — and applauds the fellow contestant who stepped up to warn Emily about Kalon’s comments.

Sean explains that he didn’t overhear the inflammatory remark, as it happened on the group date in London (Earlier in the episode, Sean got his own one-on-one with Emily). It was Doug Clerget who took it upon himself to tell Emily about Kalon’s comments during Romeo and Juliet practicing, Sean says. “My hat’s off to him. He knows what it’s like to raise and protect a child and felt it was his place to step in and try to protect Emily.”

The entire house was impressed with how firmly Emily stood up to Kalon after hearing what he’d been saying behind her back, Sean adds. “The guys came home [from the cocktail party] and would not stop talking about it. Everyone was really impressed with the way she handled it and liked seeing that side of her,” he continues. “You can only be cheery and happy for so long. Emily certainly showed her other side that night.”
