Bachelor Nation is a place of great hope — and even greater skepticism. When Life & Style released its “Yes, I’m Engaged!” cover story this past week, some folks were thrilled and others put on their notsofast faces — with good reason.
The magazine doesn’t actually quote Emily Maynard as saying she is engaged. It’s a story quoting unnamed sources, for the most part, with supplementary quotes from Emily saying things like, “I am really happy. Just having gone through it and learning so much about myself and really feeling like I’ve grown as a person in the past couple of months — I really couldn’t be happier.”
That statement doesn’t necessarily imply engagement. It doesn’t even infer that she's in love. Emily has already said she’s happy, but she was also happy before she went on the show. She’s giving us even less intel than Ashley Hebert, who gave us less than Brad Womack. All Bachelors and Bachelorettes are carefully coached on how to talk to the media during the show's airing — including what to keep close to the vest.
However, magazines don’t have to worry about sticking to talking points — and Emily’s cover is strikingly similar to the Life & Style cover Ashley Hebert got for Season 7. They even have the same headline, although Emily got an exclamation point (!) and Ashley had sources speaking for her Chosen One as well.
Ashley's story said she was engaged and "elated" — but, just like Emily's story says she's "ecstatic," the quote isn't actually from The Bachelorette. (Still, Ashley did turn out to be pretty darn elated. And still is!)
According to last year’s story, "an insider" said Ashley was "definitely still in the relationship" and "really happy." Ashley's Chosen One was quoted as saying, “I’m in such a great place in my life and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.” An insider said of Ashley’s choice, “He’s the sweetest guy, and he’s very sensitive. He had his heart broken in the past, but he loves being in a relationship, and he and Ashley have great chemistry.”
That turned out to be JP Rosenbaum, as spoiled by Reality Steve, although at one point the "sensitive" part made us think maybe it meant her eventual runner-up Ben Flajnik was really her Chosen One.
Reality Steve doesn't yet know the full details on the final rose ceremony, but Emily’s new Life & Style story shares details that may or may not pan out. For example, they say Emily got engaged to her winning man on May 11 after dates with the final two men — one at a botanical garden and one at the beach. The proposal supposedly took place in the middle of the night.
Here's an interesting paragraph that could be assumed to refer to the winner, unless it's a red herring or refers to another bachelor who just happened to be flying through the hub of Charlotte, N.C.:
"Though Emily and her fiancé have to keep their romance secret until the season finishes airing, one of the top guys was spotted hopping on a plane to Emily's hometown of Charlotte, N.C. on May 31. Courtney Wade tells Life & Style that she and some female friends spoke to the contestant at the airport as he waited for his flight. 'He seemed like a very cool guy, very laid-back,' she says. 'He wasn't flirting with us at all but was low-key and funny."
That could refer to a couple of Emily's guys, including presumed frontrunners Jef Holm, Sean Lowe, and Arie Luyendyk, Jr. Then again, why would her “winner” be flying to Charlotte itself? Usually the "secret" meetings between the lovebirds are held someplace much less obvious than their hometowns. Then again, Ashley and JP were supposedly spotted together in New York City after their finale...
WHATEVER ELSE HAPPENS, EXPECT AN ENGAGEMENT
Back during Ali Fedotowsky's Season 6, Us Weekly had its own "Secrets of the Proposal" headline saying Ali was engaged, which went against the spoilers at the time saying Ali picked no one. Since every single Bachelor or Bachelorette has gotten engaged in the nine seasons since Brad Womack picked no one, it’s a safe bet to say Emily is indeed engaged as well. That doesn’t mean the rest of the details are right — and we have no idea who she picked or how we get to the end — but we’d be shocked silly if she wasn’t indeed engaged and “ecstatic” about it!
