Now that the world knows they’re a couple, newly engaged Bachelorette Emily Maynard and fiancé Jef Holm have taken flight. The lovebirds are now in Ghana, where several of Jef’s People Water colleagues are checking in on two new wells that have recently been built. As Team Jef fans should now know, Jef is co-founder of the company, whose goal is to provide clean drinking water in areas of the world that need it the most.
Wetpaint Entertainment spoke with Cody Barker, the other co-founder and Jef’s close pal. He filled us in on what the trip is all about, why he thinks Emily should be there… and if we can expect to see any other People Water bachelors on TV in the near future!
Wetpaint Entertainment: What’s the purpose of the trip?
The whole goal of People Water is to provide clean drinking water. Three months ago, we paid to have two new wells funded in Ghana, which should now be finished. So the point of the trip is for us to check in on them and film the visit.
Why is filming it important?
A huge part of what we do depends on people being able to see the change these wells bring to the communities. Documenting our trip allows us to show everyone how much of a difference can be made.
Did People Water actually build the wells?
No, we work with a company called Generosity Water. It’s another charity we partner with because they’re approved to take donations. We’re not set up to do that. Our set up is more like TOM’s, we’re a business with a social cause. So Generosity builds the wells and it’s our job to promote them.
Do you think it’s important that Emily is with you guys?
Yeah. I mean, they’re engaged now and if she’s going to be any part of his life, she needs to understand what we’re about and feel involved. We thought this would be a great thing for them to share and a great way for her to see firsthand what we do. As a mother, she’ll also be able to see the benefit the kids in these communities are getting by having clean water.
Is Ricki going, too?
That would be awesome, but no.
During the season, People Water sold ‘Team Jef’ T-shirts to help raise funding for a new well. How much money came in?
Nearly $7,000. That’s almost enough to fund a new well. And that will be another one of our goals in Ghana, to figure out the location for our next one. It’s looking like it might be Haiti.
Who would have thought this show could have helped us achieve that? Promoting the company was never Jef’s goal – he went on The Bachelorette for the right reasons. But it’s been an amazing bonus. And Jef is so happy. I’ve known him for a long time and I’ve never seen him like this.
Awww. Well there are plenty of more good-looking men at People Water. Would any of the rest of you considering doing the show?
Ha! People have been nominating me, but I don’t think I could do it. It’s too hard trying to keep everything a secret!
