Warning: It’s complicated ahead.

Earlier this week, Ames Brown and Jackie Gordon — oh, and Gia Allemand —  talked to reporters about their Bachelor Pad 2 love story, which pretty much crashed and burned a mere 2 weeks after they dramatically left the show in Episode 2. Since their explanations were cagey and confusing, Entertainment Weekly got another stab at getting closure for their heartbroken fans.

After BP2, the couple went to Napa together for what Ames calls “a remedial wine country tour.” Jackie fell for him even more. “I woke up every day happy,” she tells EW. But then they returned to New York City, where they both live, and dated for a week or two in secret because he was still on The Bachelorette.

Jackie: As for what happened later, it ended a little suddenly. I was pretty taken aback, kinda knocked down a little bit. I thought that he was the one. I certainly fell in love with him. I feel like the rug was kinda pulled out from underneath me. I feel like we went from perfection and the potential to be the perfect couple to kind of having my heart broken.

Jackie says she still asks herself every day what changed, coming up with no definitive answer — just a lot of maybes.

Jackie: Perhaps coming back to your real life and being apart from cameras and the extreme romance, maybe something on the outside changed his mind. Or maybe he just realized ‘Whoa, I need to put the brakes on this,’ or maybe he just didn’t feel like he was ready for a relationship. He had been away [from New York] for so long and maybe just wanted to take a step back. He’s been traveling a lot, and things have been very busy on his side, so I’d also probably attribute it to that. To me, it was like walking away from something that had very beautiful potential.

Ames reiterates that he was instantly drawn to Jackie on BP2 — and he continues to compliment her — but it sounds like he just lost that loving feeling after a short surge of showmance adrenaline.

Ames: She is a really, really great girl, beautiful and charming, and we just weren’t the perfect match in the end.

However, Ames pretty much shoots down the idea that he’s keeping himself single to be the Season 16 Bachelor.

Ames: I can honestly say nobody has even mentioned the possibility of becoming the Bachelor to me. I imagine by now, somebody would have mentioned something. So I think for better or for worse, that’s something I don’t have to think about.

As for Jackie’s thoughts on the matter, she questions whether Ames is ready to be the Bachelor, since he fell in love with Ashley Hebert, then with her, in quick succession. “If I were in that situation, I would maybe want some time.” Yeah. When a guy falls in and out of love that quickly he could just be on romance overdrive. Maybe park it for a bit!
