It's a long way down from The Happiest Mug Shot Ever Taken to possibly spending eight years in prison.

Kasey Kahl — best known as the tattooed guard-and-protect-your-heart guy from The Bachelorette Season 6 who went on to be a power couple with Vienna Girardi on Bachelor Pad Season 2 — was arrested in January in Fresno, CA on a drunken and disorderly conduct charge. Earlier this month, things got more serious when he was charged with two counts of felony assault, one for felony battery, and one for public intoxication. He was also accused of being under the influence of alcohol. Kasey has denied allegations that he hit a woman that night. (A report that he was high on paint thinners that night was erroneous, however.)

On Friday, August 31, Kasey pleaded not guilty to felony assault. His lawyer, Gerald Saul Schwab, told E! News that Kasey was just defending himself that night and he has several witnesses to back him up.

Kasey's next hearing is on October 2 and if he's convicted of everything, E! says he could be heading to state prison for eight years. That's enough to wipe the smile off anyone's face. "He is not doing well," Kasey's lawyer said. "He is upset that he is being charged simply by defending himself."

UPDATE: The Associated Press reported on March 29, 2013, that Kasey will avoid jail time and serve 180 days of community service after pleading no contest to a count of battery causing bodily harm. The judge dismissed the assault charge.
