By now, all Bachelorette fans are familiar with the story of Emily Maynard's first fiance, NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick, who died in a plane crash in 2004 just days before Emily learned she was pregnant with their daughter, Ricki.
On The Bachelor Season 15, Emily got emotional during a group date at a race track, leading fans to chastise ABC for making her relive that pain. Well, they did it again on The Bachelorette: One of her Season 8 suitors is IndyCar driver Arie Luyendyk, Jr.
Worried that Emily would be upset at having to face another reminder of her ex-fiance, Arie told Em about his racing status on the premiere — and she was fine with it.
Her feelings haven’t changed. When asked about her initial reaction to Arie’s profession during a post-premiere media conference call, Emily revealed that she didn’t think it was cruel of ABC to cast him. “I mean, I was really just grateful that Arie was so open about it the very first night he told me,” she said. “But I know about NASCAR. I don't know anything about IndyCar and they're very — they're two completely different worlds. I have never even seen one before. So, I didn't know anything about it. And, I mean, Arie is such a great guy. He could be a taxicab driver and I wouldn't have cared.”
If he had been a cab driver, it wouldn’t have made for a noteworthy announcement. But, sorry, there was no shock or anger on her end. “No, not at all,” Emily said. “And maybe that's what people [were] expecting, but no. I didn't care about that.”
Well, at least she had an ostrich egg and a helicopter to care about. Better luck next time, Most Dramatic Moments department!
