File this under sad and uncommonly morbid, but true. Julien Hug, the 35-year-old former suitor from Jillian Harris's season of The Bachelorette, is just the latest in a series of reality TV stars to meet untimely ends. As the Daily Beast recaps the recent tragedies:- Joseph Cerniglia, who appeared on an episode of Fox's Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, was found floating in New York's Hudson River in September after jumping from the George Washington Bridge. (He follows Rachel Brown, who competed on Ramsay's Hell’s Kitchen in 2006 and was found dead in her home the next May after shooting herself.)
- Matt Hughes, a meteorologist featured on Discovery Channel's Storm Chaser, committed suicide by hanging in May.
- Captain Phil Harris of Deadliest Catch died in February of a stroke.
- Ryan Jenkins, who starred on Megan Wants a Millionaire, killed himself in 2009 after being accused of killing his model wife.
As we now know, Julien Hug's death was also a suicide; he allegedly drove into the Californian desert and shot himself in the head.
What is going on? With the exception of Captain Phil, these are all self-inflicted tragedies. Is the pressure of reality TV a factor in their deaths? Are the people typically cast on reality TV shows — usually adrenaline junkies, fame seekers, and attention hounds — more prone to the emotional highs and lows that lead to breakdowns? Is it all just a coincidence? Whatever is going on, we hope the "curse" ends now.
