Age: 25
Occupation: Mushroom Farmer
Hometown: Medellin, Colombia

Bachelorette Emily Maynard has said she’s into guys with tattoos — but what about mushroom farmers? Bachelorette Season 8 contestant Alejandro Velez is bringing some Top Chef-caliber culinary expertise to Emily’s season. Alejandro, who lives in San Francisco, not only has a famed TED talk on sustainability under his belt, but also co-founded Back to the Roots, a company that sells sustainable mushroom-growing kits (made from coffee waste!).

Alejandro, 25, graduated summa cum laude from the University of California — Berkeley, and has been a rising star for the entirety of his young professional life. According to an interview with, Alejandro’s list of awards includes being named one of BusinessWeek’s Top 25 Entrepreneurs Under 25, BusinessWeek’s Top 25 Social Entrepreneurs in America, 2010 Social Venture Network Social Innovation winner, and one of UCLA’s Opportunity Green Top 25 Green Company Leaders.

But that’s not all; Alejandro is also a fighter, as evidenced by his triumph over Hodgkins Lymphoma.  He’s too young to have this much under his belt! Will he find a love connection with Emily, who’s also experienced both triumph and tragedy in her young age?
