With only five months to go before the beginning of the end — i.e. the release of the first part of the Hunger Games finale, Mockingjay - Part 1 — we finally have our first teaser, and it's a foreboding one.

The teaser comes in the form of a propaganda film for Capitol TV, in which President Snow (Donald Sutherland) addresses the citizens of his rapidly fracturing nation. The camera pans around Snow, who's dressed in all white, seated on a white chair against a white backdrop, and accompanied by a standing individual — also dressed in white.

"Since the dark days, our great nation has known only peace," he opines. "Ours is an elegant system, conceived to nourish and protect. Your Districts are the body. The Capitol is the beating heart. Your hard work feeds us, and in return, we feed and protect you."

And that's when the PSA takes an ominous turn: "If you resist the system, you starve yourself. If you fight against it, it is you who will bleed."

As the camera pans back, we see that the man standing at Snow's side is none other than Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), gazing vacantly upward.

"I know you will stand with me, with us, with all of us — together, as one," Snow continues. "Panem today, Panem tomorrow, Panem forever."

It's only then that Peeta makes direct eye contact at the camera.

Those of you who have read Mockingjay know the context, but for those who are only watching the movies, your question is a valid one: Why is Peeta suddenly Snow's poster boy?

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 hits theaters on November 21, 2014.
