If you love to hate Sutton (Alexandra Chando) on The Lying Game, that’s all in executive producer Charles Pratt Jr.’s plan. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said with Sutton, “you try to make them hateful and horrible, then make them try to change and ultimately do. Then they get screwed over so they fall right back into it.” That’s why we see moments of Sutton’s redemption, only to have her make out with Ethan (Blair Redford) and prevent his reconciliation with Emma (Alexandra Chando). She’s clearly the evil twin!
In the interview, Pratt also dropped some major spoilers about what we can expect from the finale, which airs March 5. First off, wedding bells will ring: “there's going to be a wedding [in the finale], which will affect everybody, the fact that it comes about so quickly, the urgency to do it and the reasons behind it,” says Pratt. Our guess for who is headed down the aisle? Rebecca (Charisma Carpenter) and Alec Rybak (Adrian Pasdar). But before the double-crossing couple gets to say “I do,” the cops might come a-knocking.
“There might be an arrest that will boggle peoples' minds or confirm things for others. At the very end of the [finale], we're going to make a reveal and a twist that is truly a Lying Game changer,” teases Pratt. Alice Greczyn, who plays Mads Rybak, also talked about the cliffhanger ending in an exclusive interview with Wetpaint Entertainment, saying it “clearly sets a tone for Season 2 which is just more scandal and drama and mystery.”
Could this have something to do with that photo of Alec going after Derek (Ben Elliott) before his death? Maybe, but Pratt says fans shouldn’t be so quick to believe Alec is all villain. “A lot of things come his way and I think we'll start questioning whether he is as bad a guy as we thought all along,” says Pratt. Hey, we have nothing but love for Mads’ dad and his sinister ways.
Finally, the rocky romance between Ethan and Emma may not have a happy ending — yet. Waiting in the wings is Angry Birds aficionado Thayer (Christian Alexander). While he once had eyes for Sutton, viewers have definitely been getting the “I wanna twin swap” vibe from the chic geek. “He has, in a Hardy Boy way, been circling Emma and for her, if Thayer is interested, she isn't quite aware of it yet but she does see a sensitive side to him that she's never seen in Ethan,” Pratt tells THR. “Ultimately the question for her, and this is next season, could Thayer be the safe boyfriend when you can't have the guy you really love?”
Interesting conundrum. On the one hand, Ethan’s a motorcycle-riding bad boy who’s cheated on both twins. On the other hand, Thayer is a possible LARPer with daddy issues. We know who we’d pick…
