The Originals are a family of ancient vampires, and they're about to come to life in full force in their own spin-off from The Vampire Diaries. The backdoor pilot episode aired April 25 on The CW, and the series premiere will air October 3 after The Vampire Diaries.
The show will follow three of the Original Vampires — Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), Rebeka Mikaelson (Claire Holt), and Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies) — siblings who have been alive more than 1,000 years. The Originals takes place in present-day New Orleans, but also promises to highlight some of the Mikaelson family's past history in that city.
The family was once a lot bigger: Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic), Henrik, Finn, Esther, and Mikael have since passed on, but there’s always a chance we’ll see them in flashbacks during the show.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Julie Plec set up the show’s premise:
“The idea is that a turn of events in Mystic Falls [the location where The Vampire Diaries takes place] sends Klaus to New Orleans to solve a mystery. He gets word that some people are making a move against him that might concern him. So he heads to New Orleans to try to figure out who’s plotting against him and what they’re up to.”
In the early 1900s, several of the Originals lived in the town. In fact, they were an influential force on the city. But in Klaus’s absence, a new supernatural took over. The OV’s former protégé Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) is running things now, and he just may be plotting against his former mentor. The backdoor pilot also introduced us to another plot complication: the beautiful werewolf Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is pregnant with Klaus's child — the first to ever be born to a hybrid (Klaus — part vampire, part werewolf) and a werewolf. We don't know when that baby is going to become a part of the show, but we do know Klaus accepts the pregnancy, at one point remarking: "Every king needs an heir."
If the teasers and the pilot are any indication, Klaus seems determined to take back his "kingdom" from Marcel. His time in Mystic Falls found him missing the power that comes with being a ruler, and he wants to take that power back from his protégé-turned-king.
When Klaus bragged about having witches on The Vampire Diaries, he wasn’t kidding. We’ll meet Sophie (Daniella Pineda), a spellcaster who has lost her powers. Then there’s Davina (Danielle Campbell), a naive young witch who has some serious secrets. Rounding out The Originals crew is Camille (Leah Pipes), a human psychology major fascinated by the ideas of good and evil.
Not to claim The Vampire Diaries is a light and happy series itself, but The Originals seems poised to explore a darker side of the TVD universe. While we still don't know too much about the plot for The Originals, we DO have a roundup of all the spoilers we know so far! We can’t wait to see how everyone’s intertwined and what New Orleans has to offer the Originals.
