The Originals is one of the most hyped new shows of fall — but did the viewers bite into Thursday night’s premiere episode?

Well, that’s debatable. A little over two million people tuned in to meet the Original family on the Vampire Diaries spin-off, giving the new series an unfortunate 0.9 in the coveted 18-49 ratings demo. The Originals as down 25 percent from the Beauty and the Beast premiere in its post-TVD time slot last year.

However, there are a couple of factors at play here. The Vampire Diaries also returned down 25 percent for its fifth season premiere, earning a 1.2 in the demo. So it makes sense that The Originals would be lower because its TVD lead-in was down.

The CW also points out The Vampire Diaries adds 69 percent to its viewership from streaming on other platforms. So in reality, while the network probably hoped for a better debut for The Originals, it’s not the end of the world, especially when online streams are factored in.

Of course, the real test for The Originals will come on Tuesday, October 8, when it moves to its regular time slot at 8 p.m. ET.

So let’s support our TVD Family and tune in for Episode 2, fang fans!
