It was hard not to feel something for Davina (Danielle Campbell) in last night’s episode of The Originals. Episode 5 (“Sinners and Saints”) revealed Davina’s tragic backstory: chosen along with three of her teenage witch friends to be sacrificed to the ancestral spirits, she escaped a slit throat thanks to Marcel’s timely intervention. Will Davina be able to contain her immense power? Danielle talked to Entertainment Weekly about her on-screen counterpart’s ability to control her dangerous powers…

“[Davina] is vulnerable,” Danielle said, referring to the witch’s emotions — simultaneously, a danger and a humanizer. “She is just this young girl who still wants a normal life too. That’s one of the biggest things that people are going to fall for. She’s a young girl with so much power, but yet she can fall in love like everyone else.”

We imagine it would be difficult to conduct a teenage romance when a whole community of witches are on the lookout, desperate to cut Davina’s throat to complete the sacrificial ritual — the same sacrificial ritual that, left uncompleted, resulted in Davina absorbing the power of her three dead friends. If Davina isn’t killed before “The Reaping,” all of the witches (including Davina herself) will lose their magical ability. High stakes, much?

Danielle thinks that Davina’s backstory will shift viewers’ perspective of her character from “this evil little girl in an attic” to a much more understandable and likeable character. We always gave Davina the benefit of the doubt morality-wise — perhaps because most of the characters have at least a century’s head start in the bad behavior department — but we definitely like her character a bit more after last night’s ep. The question is: what will she choose to do with her powers? And how much will Davina’s co-characters like her if she does decide to give it up?
