The Originals is a show that doesn’t have a clearly defined hero (or villain, for that matter) and that’s just one of the many reasons we love it. But where do you fall on the central Marcel Gerard (Charles Michael Davis) vs. Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) battle for the Quarter? Have you stayed loyal to Vampire Diaries villain Klaus, or do you find yourself gravitating toward charismatic Marcel?

Team Klaus

Everyone loves a redemption story, and Klaus’s story arc has the potential to tell an epic one. Klaus started out as a TVD’s most wanted, even when wreaking havoc and heartbreak for our favorite characters, there was something delightful about the show whenever Joseph Morgan was on screen. There’s something to root for in the story of the bastard son, still desperately seeking the love and approval he never got from from his father, ignorant to the love he receives elsewhere. We want him to become better because that means there is hope for even the darkest of souls.

Team Klaus also has the considerable talent of Joseph Morgan in its corner. There’s something lovable about the cheeky way he delivers Klaus’s lines, the mischievous, slightly maniacal glint that sparks to life when Klaus schemes. Conversely, JoMo can play vulnerable and broken like no one’s business. (See Season 1, Episode 7: “Bloodletting”.) It’s this range and depth of emotion that makes Team Klaus so darn appealing.

Team Marcel

When we started watching The Originals, we weren’t sure if there was anything to root for in Marcel’s prideful swagger. What was this vamp club owner and Quarter overlord about besides chasing tail and gathering minions? Then, we learned a bit more of his backstory. He rose from a childhood as a plantation slave with the help of the Mikaelsons, who took him under their wing. Though we don’t think there is anything particularly heroic about the lust for power, between his childhood and Klaus’s controlling upbringing, we can understand how Marcel came to desire it.

There was something heroic, however, about the way Marcel rescued Davina from the witch’s sacrifice. Though his actions may have been partially motivated by power dynamics, he seems to genuinely want to help the girl and consider her family. So far, Marcel’s desire to protect Davina makes him a far more sympathetic character than Klaus, who has spent his days on The Originals snarking and daggering his siblings, and whining about his desire to rule the French Quarter. Until Klaus steps out of villain-mode, Team Marcel is looking pretty tempting (especially when he takes off his shirt).
