Sassy vamp Rebekah (Claire Holt) might just be our favorite Mikaelson on The Originals — she’s cool, complex, and uber-protective of the people she loves. Now that she is a main character on her very own show, how have her motives changed — if at all? Claire chatted with Alloy Entertainment about her character’s motivations.

“I think, despite the fact she can be an evil wench at times, she has a soft spot in there,” Claire said of vulnerable vampire Rebekah. “I try very hard to make her somewhat likeable, and the writers do a good job there of giving her some vulnerability so she can be this sassy, badass vampire, but she can also be really relatable and feels pain and feels hurt. I think everyone can sort of relate to that and that’s why people seem to like her, I guess. You know, she’s spunky and fun and sassy and also, as much as she’s this supernatural creature, she has elements of a real girl.”

Yeah, Rebekah is the best — and we’ve been seriously digging her friendship with lady werewolf Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). Now that Hayley is stuck in Chateau Klaus, what does Claire have to say about their friendship moving forward? Will these two stay besties?

“I think Rebekah realizes that her and Hayley are quite similar,” Claire said. “They both have been abandoned by their families at one point or another. They feel that sort of pain of not knowing really where they stand in the world. And, also, this is a girl who is now her family, as well. And she has always been loyal to her brothers and I think she feel some of that loyalty towards Hayley.” Sounds like these two are BFFs for the long run. We’d definitely be for more scenes exploring this female friendship. (And more Davina/Cami scene-age, while we’re at it!)

Rebekah initially came to New Orleans to make sure older brother Elijah (Daniel Gillies) was OK. (Spoiler: He wasn’t. Klaus had daggered him.) Now that Elijah is up and walking again, what is Rebekah’s motivation to stay in New Orleans? “She comes to New Orleans to get her brother Elijah back, and that’s her goal at the moment. I think things change and develop over the course of the season, and we’ll learn new things about her and what she craves and love has always been one of those things and I’m sure that’s going to be an underlying theme for her.”

As for the other brother, Klaus (Joseph Morgan), will Rebekah ever be able to trust him again after all of the terrible things he has done to her? Claire is surprisingly skeptical. “I’m not sure that he ever can [earn back her trust]. He has to prove himself to be worthy of that trust and he doesn’t, so until he makes some sort of changes, I think she’s always going to be wary of him.” Get to work, Klaus! This is a much worthier project than trying to take over New Orleans.
