It’s been too long since The Originals has been on our screen. Luckily, Daniel Gillies (Elijah Mikaelson) is here to deliver our fix of the supernatural drama while we wait for the new episode on January 14. What did Daniel have to say about the blossoming relationship between Elijah and fierce werewolf, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin)? It might surprise you!

Daniel told The Huffington Post that he thinks Elijah’s draw to Hayley comes from her status as “forbidden fruit,” i.e. being the mother of his brother’s future child. Not a very promising perspective for Elijah/Haley romantics. Daniel continued: “I don’t think they're a good match. It’s kind of gross if you think about it. Let’s just take this intimacy to its natural conclusion. They have sex. What does that mean when your brother’s child is within her? There’s something obscene about it. But it’s sort of wonderful in an independent film kind of way.”

The actor went on to say that, “For this show, I’m certainly not excited about the relationship.” More than that, he doesn’t think the fans are either, as it is too reminiscent of the love triangle that so defines The Vampire Diaries: “I think the people who turned to our show were really hoping and praying there wouldn’t be a love triangle. Unfortunately, that’s kind of the convention that’s been thrown at them. That said, I know we’re making the best of it that we possibly can. We just continue to see where it takes us.”

We can see where Daniel is coming from. We do want The Originals to be different. That being said, we’re kind of digging the Elijah/Hayley dynamic. We would be for it being divorced from a possible Klaus/Hayley romance, which makes little sense to us based on how we have seen these characters act so far. So, how about a love line, Daniel?

Do you agree with Daniel’s assessment of the Hayley/Elijah relationship? Do you want to see them together? Sound off in the comments below!

The Originals airs on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
