Though Daniel Gillies (Elijah Mikaelson) is excited about the success of The Originals, he’s even more enthralled with the experience of being a father. He and actress wife Rachael Leigh Cook gave birth to their first baby, a girl named Charlotte, in September. Daniel confessed to ClevverTV — if forced to choose between acting and fatherhood — he would “give up acting in a heartbeat.” Read on to hear Daniel gush some more about his gorgeous family!

“[Fatherhood] is amazing. It’s one of the most incredible things ever,” Daniel said. When asked how the two jobs compare — acting and fatherhood — the Kiwi actor went on to say: “I’d give up acting in a heartbeat … I’ve never seen myself doing anything other than acting, writing, and directing, but I just think it terms of significance, being a father is just far more fulfilling.”

Though Daniel doesn’t have so much in common with his centuries-old on-screen vampire counterpart, Elijah and Daniel’s dual dedications to their families seems to be a common trait. And, with a baby on the way on The Originals, does Daniel have any advice for the other cast members about how their characters might handle the huge change?

“I’m not really at the tip-issuing stage, to be honest with you,” Daniel good-naturedly confessed. “I’m learning, and it’s an avalanche of an education. I’m just very lucky to be married to the woman I’m married to because she’s baring the brunt of a lot of the sleepless nights.” Daniel Gillies, telling it like it is! And he insists it’s not a line when he continues on to not only praise his wife, but all woman...

“I don’t think men truly understand until they witness this first hand like what a woman undergoes during not just the pregnancy and the labor, but also the aftermath,” Daniel said. “Women are warriors and we have no right to ever be cruel to our sisters or mothers or daughters ever.”

Is he a charmer or what?

The Originals returns on Tuesday, February 25 at 8 p.m. ET.
