With Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt) no longer a series regular on The Originals, might some other character step up to grab some of her screentime? We’re thinking specifically of Genevieve (Elyse Levesque), who now stands as the most powerful witch in the French Quarter — one with historical ties to the Mikaelsons. Will Genevieve become a series regular?

She leads the witches. The Originals is a show about the clash of supernatural factions in the French Quarter: the witches, vampires, werewolves, and humans. With Celeste, Sophie, and Bastianna dead and Davina seriously out of it, Genevieve now stands as the leader of the witches. That’s not nothing.

She has a history with the Mikaelsons. And what else is this show but a story of the Mikaelsons, the ones they love, and the ones they hate. At the moment, Genevieve stands in the last category. She was tricked (and then killed) by Rebekah back in the day. Now that Bex is gone, will her relationship with the Mikaelsons change?

She had chemistry with Klaus. When Rebekah and Klaus were captured by the witches, Genevieve was the one tasked with showing Klaus the truth of Rebekah’s betrayal in 1919. She also removed the dagger o’ pain from his chest. They had some sort of chemistry. Genevieve seemed fascinated by Klaus. In a flashback to 1919, she even admits to having a crush of sorts on the Original hybrid. For his part, Klaus doesn’t kill Genevieve when he regains his strength. Sure, he was distracting by his rage for Rebekah, but this was still a bit out-of-character, don’t you think?

She has Davina. To be a series regular, one must generally have some sort of meaningful relationship and/or interaction with at least one other series regular. Now that Davina has been turned over to Genevieve and the other witches, Genevieve may just have that. How will these two interact with one another? Will they be friends — even family? If so, Genevieve has a much greater chance at sticking around. And, going by this photo of the two actress hanging together on set, we think the show may be heading in that direction.

Her story is compelling. We weren’t expecting to like Genevieve as much as we did, given that she was scheming Klaus and Rebekah, but we totally did. Her story of falling into friendship with Rebekah in 1919, and wanting to help her new friend “reunite” her father with their family was a sympathetic one. And it’s hard not to understand Genevieve’s hate for Rebekah after finding out that the Original vamp killed her with Spanish influenza to keep the secret of her betrayal safe. We could stand to learn more about this character.
