It’s been a few weeks since Claire Holt (Rebekah Mikaelson) left The Originals as a series regular (and broke our hearts), but the Australian actress is finally elaborating on the circumstances of her departure. And, predictably, Claire is as gracious as we have come to expect from her, telling Buzzfeed that The Originals has “a special place” in her heart.

“It’s ludicrous,” Claire said of reports that her departure had anything to do with behind-the-scenes drama. “I want to be very clear that they didn’t run out of material, I wasn’t pushed out, I wasn’t fed up with Rebekah, I didn’t quit mid-season, there was no drama, there was no rift between cast members; it really came down to the fact that I completed my initial commitment and made a life choice, not a career choice.”

Claire spoke eloquently and affectionately about her roles on both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals: “This show has been so amazing for my career, and I’ve had such unbelievable material, it was just never my intention to be away from home this long.” The role of Rebekah originally began as a three-episode arc on TVD.

Claire also said that it was an easy decision to make, as she has become part of the TVD/The Originals family: “It was a tough choice that I didn’t fully make it right up until the end, because I was enjoying myself so much. But three seasons later, I realized I hadn’t been home to Australia in years, I hadn’t seen my family, and I hadn’t spent time with the people I loved.”

Will Claire return to The Originals? It certainly sounds like it. She told the news outlet: “This show has such a special place in my heart. I am so glad I was able to do The Originals, and I want to be a part of that family for a long time. I am simply looking at this as a temporary absence.” Temporary absence sounds good to us. Though we totally respect Claire’s reasons for leaving, we started missing Rebekah the moment she crossed the NOLA city limits.

The Originals airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
