Death and The Originals go hand-in-hand, which means executive producer Julie Plec has adopted a rule when killing off characters: always let the actors know first. Except for that time she forgot to tell Danielle Campbell (Davina). Whoops!

The Originals cast and creative team took to the PaleyFest stage this weekend to chat about their successful spinoff and, of course, the talk turned to killing characters off. According to Variety, Julie said: “We have a rule that if you’re killing off a series regular, you have to tell them first. If you’re killing off a person temporarily, you have to warn them before the script comes out.”

Unfortunately, when teenage witch Davina was killed off in Season 1, Episode 11 ("Après Moi, Le Déluge") the creative team forgot to tell Danielle. Apparently, she only found out when the script for the episode came out. Awkward. Julie sent her an email apologizing, and we’re guessing it probably helped that Davina came back to life four episodes later. After all, what does death really mean on a show about vampires, witches, and werewolves? It’s an inconvenience, if anything, especially for a witch as powerful (and a character as compelling) as Davina!

We’re surprised this is the first time Julie has forgotten to notify an actor of his or her character’s impending death. She kills a lot of characters off on both The Originals and The Vampire Diaries, especially new characters. Julie also admitted at PaleyFest that most new characters are “created to die.” Then again, the Mikaelsons started as new characters on TVD, and now they rule the French Quarter on their very own spinoff. We’re rooting for you, new characters!

The Originals airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
