Marcel went to great lengths to steal Father Kiernan’s key in the most recent episode of The Originals, sending Josh to snatch the necklace from the priest’s neck as he was succombing to the hex, and Josh really didn’t feel good about it, OK? According to Marcel, people will be coming for this necklace and “Cami’s not ready for this. Not yet.” What’s the secret behind Kieran’s key? We speculate below!

It leads to another white stake. In a town filled with immortal Original vampires, you can never have enough white oak stakes. One of the tricky storytelling dilemmas inherent in The Originals formula is that the Mikaelsons are just so gosh darn impervious to harm. (At least of the physical variety.) Negotiating that fact to keep the stakes high on this show will always be an issue, which is why a few more white oak stakes could help the situation. We’ll also accept another kind of Original-killing device that would be of equal threat to our main characters. Sorry, guys! Gotta keep the drama compelling, you know?

It unlocks a secret weapon for the humans. The counter to the The Mikaelsons Are Too Powerful For Us to Fear For Them dilemma is the The Humans Are Too Weak To Frighten Anyone Else problem. Let’s face it: in a battle of factions, the werewolves, vampires, and witches all come out ahead of the humans when it comes to physical abilities. Which means we need a way to make the humans competitive in the Quarter. We think Kieran’s key might be the solution to that problem, and we think it’s super important that Cami be the one to possess it. If that key and whatever secret weapon it may represent gets into the hands of Francesca or another cutthroat leader, then destruction is sure to follow.

It’s a total fake out. These are the same creative Powers That Be behind The Vampire Diaries — i.e. show of the fake Sun and Moon Curse. Could the key be another epic fake out, a trinket with mythology attached to somehow keep the human element from supporting the supernatural community? It’s very possible, especially given that Klaus has created much of the history of this city and he was the mastermind behind the fake Sun and Moon Curse. Have Kieran and his ancestors been keeping the key around their necks because they think it has some religious or magical value that keeps their fates tied to the supernaturals? It’s certainly a possibility to consider.
