It’s a running joke that The Vampire Diaries is snubbed every single year by the high-brow TV Academy, so imagine our surprise when we found its spin-off, The Originals, on the complete list of nominees for the 2014 Emmy Awards. What got the fangtastic NOLA drama noticed? Read on to find out!

It looks like The Originals has been nominated for Outstanding Hairstyling For a Multi-Camera Series or Special for Season 1, Episode 12 (“Dance Back From the Grave”) — you know, the episode where Papa Tunde arrived and caused all kinds of chaos?

Colleen Labaff and Kimberly Spiteri have been nominated for their work on The Originals and will be going head-to-head against the hair stylings of Dancing With the Stars, Key & Peele, The Oscars, Saturday Night Live, and The Voice.

Of course, this made showrunner Julie Plec very happy. “Well hot damn!” she tweeted. “Someone's magnificent little hair department broke the CW's Emmy nomination curse. Congrats Colleen and Kim! #TheOriginals.”

Not only did The Originals break the CW’s dry spell, but another new show, The 100, also received a nomination this year. “Oooh and someone tells me The 100 got nominated in VFX!” Julie corrected. “Banner day for the little CW engines that could. Congrats @JRothenbergTV.”

It looks like Elijah Mikaelson’s (Daniel Gillies) hair is finally getting the recognition it deserves. That perfectly coiffed ‘do deserves to take home the gold, don’t you think?
