One of the reasons Season 1 of The Originals was so fantastic was because of the budding relationship — dare we say it: romance — between Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies). So what does Season 2 have coming up for the couple? Read on to find out!

Unfortunately for Haylijah fans, it sounds like romance isn’t high on the priority list for these two when we return to NOLA this fall. “[Hayley] and Klaus (Joseph Morgan) are the only two hybrids in existence now, so Elijah will inevitably wonder, ‘Is there a connection between my brother and Hayley that I could never surpass?’” executive producer Michael Narducci told TVLine. “There’s going to be some interesting friction. Ultimately, Elijah is going to have to decide, ‘Do I want to help this girl?’”

Woof, it sounds like there are definitely going to be hurdles for Hayley and Elijah to overcome, not to mention the fact that there is that lingering connection she has with Klaus — first the baby and now being hybrids. But, according to another tease, Elijah will be going through a few changes of his own this season.

“Elijah should be nervous about a lot of things. Elijah is going to go through some s—t this year at the beginning of the season,” executive producer Julie Plec teased to E! News. “It’s not going to be all puppy dogs and rainbows for him at all.”

Atop that list of worries for Elijah, however, is his relationship with Hayley. Julie teases that the sharp-dressed vamp will have to deal with the possibility of Hayley “reconnecting” with Jackson (Nathan Parsons) this season because he “will make his return about six episodes in.”

Our prognosis for Haylijah this season? They will have many mountains to climb, but we’re holding out hope for these two to have an extremely romantic reunion. Our fingers are definitely crossed!
