When it comes to the history of the Mikaelson family, there are still a lot of holes left to be filled. We got a lot of backstory during the freshman season of The Originals, but what can we expect in Season 2? Flashbacks to Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) as a child, of course!

Executive producer Michael Narducci spoke with TVLine about the sophomore season, saying it’s “all about confronting the sins of the past.” What exactly does that mean? We’ll let Michael continue. “We’re very much defined by our parents, but as we become adults, we begin to choose our own paths. Klaus is very much a product of his abusive father, and very much a product of his mother.”

Hmm, that’s a convenient thing to say now that both Mikael and Esther are both alive and well. We suspected that we’d explore more about the history surrounding the Mikaelson family — including the patriarch and matriarch — and what better way to do that than in flashback form?

Michael goes on to tease that we’ll see “flashbacks to when [Klaus] was a child,” as well as “right before he became a vampire.” These scenes will help “examine what his relationship was with his mother, and the sense of betrayal that he felt when she came back from the dead and judged him as an abomination.”

So basically we’re about to dump all kinds of mommy issues on top of what was already a heaping pile of daddy issues. We hope Klaus is ready for this wild ride because we sure are!
