We love seeing Beverley Mitchell go from boy-crazy Lucy on 7th Heaven to sweet-as-pie guidance counselor Katelyn O’Malley on Secret Life of the American Teenager. Everyone’s dying to know more about Bev, so she recently chatted with Wetpaint and other media outlets about her relationship with Brenda Hampton, a typical day on the Secret Life set and her romantic wedding in Italy!
What's it like working with Secret Life creator Brenda Hampton, who also created 7th Heaven, again?
Brenda Hampton is... I mean, I can’t say enough good things about her. She is one of the most phenomenal human beings I have ever met in my entire life. She’s been so amazing and has been so supportive and has always been there for me since I was 15 years old. Even through the years after 7th Heaven, we’ve always stayed in touch, we’ve gone to lunch, we’ve checked in. She’s just honestly such a rarity in Hollywood. She’s just so true to the people that she loves and she takes care of people, and I am so, so, so, so blessed that she came into my life.
Tell us about a typical day on the Secret Life set!
Well, usually for me when I’m working, I’m usually the first up, so I’m usually at work by six, which is great. And I go get an amazing breakfast and then get to hang out with the amazing makeup and hair department, who are just dear friends. Then we rehearse, and this is one of the most efficient crews I have ever had the pleasure of working with. We can take a huge 10-page day and hammer it out so quickly and so efficiently and we have so much fun doing it. What’s cool is nobody’s going back to their trailers and being all by themselves, everybody’s talking, conversing, having fun and catching up because it’s definitely kind of like a family. And it’s just such a pleasure to come to a set and feel so comfortable and feel at ease and feel loved and wanted. And usually for me, the day always ends with my dear crew singing “Happy Birthday” to me to make me embarrassed and humiliate me. Because that has been going on since the 7th Heaven days … by this time I’m like 200 years old!
Who's your biggest TV crush?
Hmmm, you’re trying to get me in trouble with my husband! Favorite TV crush, wow, I don’t even know! I guess I’d have to say Eric Dane, he’s the first one that came to me!
If you could change one thing about Secret Life, what would it be?
That’s not that hard, I’d be on every episode! I’ll just be selfish and say that!
Will there be a love interest for Katelyn?
Oh, I don’t know, but that would be fun!
What was your most romantic moment?
It’d be a toss up between my engagement and my actual wedding. Our wedding was in Italy and it couldn’t have been more romantic, and we couldn’t have been any goofier. Which is perfect for us, it speaks volumes for our relationship. We just are all about having fun and being silly and being goofy. We got married in this beautiful church, and we walked through the streets of Italy and we had music playing, and our guests were following us, and all the locals were throwing flower petals and candy at us. That was pretty magical and romantic and amazing, and shared with the all the people that we love so dear — which makes it even more romantic, even though it wasn’t just the two of us, it was kind of everyone. But being filled with, and surrounded by, so much love made it an extremely special moment.
Which Secret Life couple are you most rooting for this season?
I think the couple that I’m most rooting for would be Ricky and Amy. Just ‘cause they’re so cute together. They’re so cute! And obviously having a child together, I think is awesome. That’s a really hard question, because now I’m like, hmmm, Ben and Adrian too, because obviously they’re having a child together too. So that’s a tricky question.
Dr. Bink never really won the kids over. Will Katelyn become close to them?
I think that Katelyn’s goal is kinda become a friend but still do her job. So far, it’s not necessarily always working out that way. There’s a lot of looks on whether or not she’s a counselor or whether she’s a student. But she definitely gets through to them and starts to create relationships, which is nice. I wouldn’t say she’s like their best friend though, that hasn’t happened yet, but who knows — she’s got plenty of episodes left!
