Teen Wolf Recap of the Season 2 Premiere, Part 1: Grandfather Flaws

The second season of Teen Wolf begins with Jackson (Colton Haynes) bursting from the water like a glorious, shirtless merman — only with a nasty bite on his torso instead of shimmering tail. It seems he survived the werewolf initiation from Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) in the Season 1 finale, though why he’s taking a midnight dip is unclear. Though little time has passed between the events of the night the Alpha was killed, almost nothing is the same.

Derek (Tyler Posey) lopes toward Allison’s (Crystal Reed) house, causing car accidents along the way. What happened to do no harm? As he cuts through the woods, a flashback shows him and Allison — what else? — making out in a car. The scene shows Papa Argent (JR Bourne) pulling him through the car window and training a gun on him. Allison begs her father not to shoot Scott and swears she’ll never seen him again. “Never again,” Mr. Argent agrees. Oh, no! Can they still be lab partners?

Lydia is recovering from her own werewolf bite in the hospital. Before Derek killed his uncle and bit Jackson, the Alpha attacked her. The ever-vigilant Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) is asleep in the waiting room, dreaming inappropriate things about a girl who was nearly torn to shreds a few days before. Lydia’s father and nurse Melissa McCall (Melissa Ponzio) discuss Stiles, who has been camped out in the hospital room all weekend and is currently making kissy faces in his sleep.

Also making kissy faces: Scott and Allison, who have an hour of shirtless make-out time before her parents return home. Or less. Scott barely has time to hear the brakes on the car, grab his clothes, and head to the roof before the bedroom door opens. As Allison complains to her mother that she’s ruining her life, Mrs. Argent conspicuously searches Allison’s closet and out the window, looking for Scott. Luckily, he’s nimble and knows the roof well.

Back at the hospital, Lydia hops in the shower with her very unhealed bite. This girl likes to clean up with her eyes closed, because she doesn’t realize the tub is filling with seeping black sludge until it’s ankle-deep. Instead of hopping out of the shower, Lydia begins pulling long clumps of hair from the drain, gagging along with the audience. Then a hand emerges from the murk and encircles her wrist. Stiles, who’s been wrestling a candy machine for his peanut butter cup, runs to her room when he hears Lydia scream. The tub is spotless, the window is open, and Lydia is long gone. Miles away, still half-naked on Allison’s roof, Scott hears her screams, too.

Sheriff Stilinsky has arrived at the hospital to take the report on Lydia’s disappearance. Instead of going home, as his father instructed, Stiles wants Scott to follow her scent. Allison pops up and insists on going with them. While Scott follows his nose, Allison explains that they aren’t the only ones looking for Lydia. Her father has organized a hunting party and more are on their way.

Meanwhile, a gravedigger is using a bulldozer in the cemetery. Something tips the machine over, and the guy lands in a fresh grave. A four-legged creature jumps over him, and he peers out to see dirt flying as a creature digs up a grave. Suddenly the bulldozer is righted and Derek asks the gravedigger if he needs a hand.

Allison, Stiles, and Scott end up at the Hale house, where the missing girl’s scent has led them. No one has ever seen Lydia on the property, and Allison wonders if she’s looking for Derek now that he’s the Alpha. Scott tells her that running in a pack makes werewolves physically stronger and faster. (Is Allison taking mental notes? This information definitely seems like it may come in handy later in the season.) When Stiles accidentally finds and deploys a trip wire, Scott ends up hanging upside down. That’s when Chris Argent arrives with his hunting party. Allison and Stiles hide, leaving Scott to chat with them, while still suspended in midair. Chris hints that Lydia might be part of Scott’s pack now, but he dodges the question, saying that it’s more like she’s part of his clique. The hunter then asks Scott if he knows what a human corporectomy is and says he hopes he never has to give him a demonstration. So does Scott, because the medical defintion of the term means cutting a body in half.

It turns out gravedigging is just Isaac’s (Daniel Sharman) night gig. When the sheriff questions him about the grave that’s been robbed, we learn Isaac plays lacrosse like Stiles — which he uses for an excuse as to how he got his black eye. While most thieves steal jewelry from the graves, this one took the corpse’s liver.

Scott and Stiles walk on campus, discussing whether or not Lydia is the liver lover. (Stiles defends his crush, saying the liver is the most nutritious body part.) When they try to figure out where Lydia might be based on how Scott reacted to transitioning into a werewolf, they realize they need to find Jackson — Allison was the only thing Scott fixated on, after all.
Jackson isn’t hard to find, because his ego is bigger than ever. As he struts through the parking lot, he hands a homeless guy a dollar and tells him to die elsewhere. Turning into a werewolf seems to be agreeing with him, and he barely has time for Scott and Stiles when they try to enlist him in their hunt for Lydia. He tells them it’s not Lydia they should be worried about — it’s whomever she runs into with her new set of claws that should concern them.

In chemistry class, Stiles gets a detention from Professor Harris and Jackson gets a nosebleed. Only it’s no ordinary nosebleed. The goop gushing from his nose is black and pouring out at an alarming rate. Derek finds Jackson in the bathroom and tells him he needs to know if something is wrong. Jackson says he doesn’t want to be Derek’s pet and he has his own agenda. When more blood starts dripping from Jackson’s ear, Derek says his body is fighting the bite.

At her locker, Allison finds three things: a sweet note from Scott, a new neighbor boy with a nice camera, and mean girls who are dissing her aunt. Since Kate was blamed for all the recent deaths around Beacon Hills, the girls say she was psycho and whisper to each other not to sit near Allison. Scott pulls her into an empty classroom and tells her everything will be fine. He’ll go to Kate’s funeral, even if he has to stay hidden.

Though he’d rather be looking for Lydia, Stiles has detention. This might not be worth mentioning if Professor Harris hadn’t made him stay later and vowed to make the wisecracker a personal project. Cue the heebie-jeebies.

At the funeral, a white-haired man destroys the memory card from a photographer who gets too close. Then he hugs Chris Argent and reintroduces himself to Allison as Gerard, her grandfather. He doesn’t look like the kind of guy to pull quarters out from behind ears, even if he does want her to call him “Grandpa.”
 
Hiding behind one of the monuments, Stiles and Scott discuss the newcomer. Though Stiles hopes he’s a non-hunting Argent, Scott recognizes Gerard and his minions for what they are: reinforcements. The sheriff finds them lurking and hauls them to his cruiser. Then they overhear him discussing an ambulance that was involved in an accident. Whatever hit it got inside, attacked the patient, and ran off again. By the time the sheriff is off the phone, Stiles and Scott have left the car.
 
The ambulance scene is bloody. Stiles wonders why Scott managed to keep himself from attacking people but Lydia can’t. Then he implores his friend to find her. Scott’s off and loping when he gets into a tussle with a werewolf who is certainly not Lydia.
 
In fact, the still-nude (except for the leaves in her hair) Lydia stumbles out of the woods and onto the crime scene. She’s shaking but manages to sassily request a coat. Awash with emotions, Stiles trips trying to comply.
 
The mystery werewolf activates the trip line and gets caught in the trap. Arriving out of nowhere, Derek shoves then drags Scott out of the way. Derek has to restrain Scott, who wants to help his fellow werewolf, who is now dangling in a very similar position to the one the lacross player found himself in only a few hours ago. Then the hunters arrive. Chris Argent whips out his electrocution stick and gives the werewolf a shock with it. “Who are you. What are you doing here,” Chris asks. The supernatural stranger says he came looking for the Alpha. Argent and his father realize they’re dealing with an Omega, meaning he has no pack, either because he was kicked out or his pack is dead.

As the Omega begs for his life, swearing the man in the ambulance was dead before he feasted on him, Grandpa Argent pulls out his weapon of choice: a freaking sword. “An Omega rarely survives on his own,” lectures the elder Argent, before slicing the hanging werewolf in two.

After witnessing the massacre, Derek tells Scott they need to stick together. Gerard has just declared war. When Chris reminds his father about their code — which says they don’t harm werewolves that haven’t hurt humans — Gerard shrugs him off. Now that a werewolf has killed his daughter, Kate, the code is off and werewolves are just “bodies waiting to be cut in half.”

The final montage shows Jackson still gushing blood in his bed, Scott and Allison holding each other, and Derek greeting Isaac. “We kill them,” says Gerard. “We kill them all.”
