Jeremy tries to protect Elena, but she's stuck flashing back to the past when her parents were still alive. One of the Salvatores returns to Mystic Falls at Elena's request, while Caroline and Tyler have to decide something life-altering. Bonnie's alliance has terrible consequences.
Klaus tries to get out of town with Elena, but Alaric thwarts his plan. Abby comes to help Bonnie with a spell, and the witch and Jeremy get in trouble trying to pull it off. Caroline is in a lot of trouble, and Elena is desperate to protect her friend.
Alaric's in danger, so Damon and Meredith team up to save him. At the 1920s Decade Dance sees Bonnie and Jamie, Elena and Stefan, and Caroline and Tyler do some coupling up of their own. Inappropriate chaperones Klaus and Damon arrive, but while the OV is focused on Caroline, Damon, Stefan, Matt, Jeremy, and Bonnie work on a spell.
Damon and Elena take a trip to see Jeremy in Denver, but he's made a scary new friend. In Mystic Falls, Tyler shows up to make out with Caroline, but he thinks something has been going on her and Klaus.
Damon and Stefan continue with their plot to kill Klaus now that they have weapons to do so. Elena, Matt, and Caroline all get involved with the plan. But Klaus is using Bonnie to cast a spell, and Rebekah gets torture-happy with her former friend with benefits (aka, Damon).
Damon's pal from yesteryear, Sage, turns up in Mystic Falls for the revamping of the Wickety Bridge. They conspire to spy on Rebekah, and Stefan has his own problems.
When Damon (finally) notices a connection between the Mystic Falls murders happening in the present day and those that occurred 100 years ago, a flashback shows the Salvatore brother's relationship with a vampire named Sage.
Elena is happy when she discovers what Damon did after the Originals' ball, but she focuses on the family's internal strife. Everyone thinks she's making a mistake, however. Bonnie and Abby are wick deep in a ritual, and Elijah gets tough with Stefan and Damon.
When Klaus hosts a ball, all the usual suspects attend. Both Caroline and Matt have unusual dates, while Elena has two: Damon and Stefan. Caroline finds herself surprised by Klaus.
Klaus hosts a dinner party, complete with an uninvited guest. More of the Originals' story is revealed. Bonnie and her mother, Abby, work on opening the fourth coffin, while something leaves Caroline devastated.
Bonnie's familal affairs take center stage as she reunites with her mother. Tyler grapples with some identity issues — mainly, how to regain his free will after being sired by Klaus — and turns to an “unexpected ally.” Meanwhile, Alaric’s new lady friend Dr. Fell (guest star Torrey DeVitto) catches the eye of his old buddy Damon. Caroline is turning 18 so Elena, Matt, and Bonnie give her a surprise party. Alaric meets up with Dr. Mary Fell again, though she's occupied with her ex-boyfriend. Damon and Stefan argue over how to deal with Klaus.
Klaus and Stefan have a standoff over his coffins, while Elena tires to make a deal with the hybrid. Speaking of hybrids, Tyler is enjoying his new abilities. A doctor, Mary Fell, notices Alaric's strange healing powers.
It’s homecoming in Mystic Falls, and the high school decides to celebrate with a dance (because those always go so well). When Rebekah tells Elena how much the event means to her, Elena starts to see her in a different light. Meanwhile, Tyler upsets Caroline and Matt with his dance moves (or his terrible behavior). In the most shocking twist of all, My Morning Jacket agrees to play a high school dance.
Bonnie and Elena help Alaric investigate the clue he discovered. Elena gets sidetracked when she and Rebekah have an encounter. At first, Rebekah plays rough with Elena, but she eventually tells the bloody back story of family, including some revealing information about Klaus and Elijah.
When Damon tries to help Stefan return to his former self, things get dangerous. Both Salvatore brothers are surprised when an unexpected person decides to become their ally.
It’s everyone’s favorite time of year — Illumination Night! (This year, Mystic Falls is banning Halloween or something.) Not only are trick or treaters headed to town, so are a bunch of ghosts. When Elena asks Jeremy for help reaching out to Stefan, her brother makes a very bad choice.
School’s back in session for the teens of Mystic Falls, and new hybrid Tyler is stoked. Elena, Caroline, Bonnie, and Matt are still dealing with the terrors of Senior Prank Night, especially Matt, who asks for Bonnie’s help with his little ghost problem (It turns out being a walking Ouija board isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.)
Damon isn’t glad to have his brother back in the Salvatore boarding house, and even though Klaus is out of town, Stefan is still doing his bidding. Alaric finds himself with a surprising addition to one of his classes.
While Caroline is trying to make the most of her senior year by forcing the gang to participate in ‘Senior Prank Night.’ Since this is Mystic Falls High School, unwelcome additions show up, turning the prank deadly. Also, Damon wants Jeremy to use his sixth sense to destroy Klaus.
Meanwhile, Klaus has Stefan commit even worse acts of violence.
Klaus won’t leave Chicago until witch Gloria helps him explain why his hybridization plan isn’t working. While Gloria is able to use her witchy woo woo to get glimmers of the truth, she discovers Stefan holds the key. Help comes from an unexpected source when Stefan finds himself in peril. A new enemy angers Damon, who does something reckless that will have repercussions. Though Caroline wants to help Elena come to grips with her feelings, the blonde vampire has her own turmoil to deal with. Meanwhile, Jeremy has an unsettling encounter with one of his ghosts, while Bonnie’s own interaction with someone affects the whole group.
An unlikely source sends Damon and Elena to Chicago as they continue to track Klaus and Stefan. The Ripper will confront his own past, when he did something really monstrous in 1920s Chicago. An old love interest of Stefan’s named Bex is introduced via a flapper-era flashback. Meanwhile, werewolf Tyler starts to worry about Caroline and looks for help from Sheriff Forbes.
Elena plans to find her M.I.A. boyfriend, but instead, gets Damon into heaps of trouble with an “unexpected enemy” instead.
Things don’t work out for Klaus, either, when the baddie’s latest strategy to gain more power doesn’t pan out, even with the help of werewolf Ray Sutton (guest star David Gallagher) — who isn’t exactly keen on helping the O.V.
Jeremy Gilbert is still being haunted by the ghosts of exes past, and turns to friend Matt Donovan for answers. Meanwhile, Caroline tries to seek advice from Tyler, who is too wrapped up in an intense discussion with his mother to help her.
Isobel surprises Alaric when she returns to town, and he’s not impressed with her demeanor. Although Elena has tons of questions when she finally meets her birth mother, Isobel refuses to answer them, but makes it clear that finding the mystery machine John Gilbert is searching for is her top priority. Stefan, Damon, and Bonnie help Elena deal with the fallout from Isobel’s dangerous actions.
Only Mystic Falls would hold a town square screening of Gone With the Wind, complete with picnic lunches, when the big bad vampire is on the loose. The film’s Civil War setting affects Damon, who begins to mistake memories of Katherine circa 1864 with modern-day Elena. When Stefan tries to prevent a tragedy, it comes at a terrible cost to him. Sheriff Forbes’ attempts to keep everyone safe cause a fatal error. With the curse-breaking ritual coming to a close, multiple lives are at risk.
Because she knows Klaus is plotting something evil, Elena tries to prep herself for what’s to come. With another full moon on the calendar, a second transformation awaits Tyler. A brave act goes unrewarded when a frightening situation still turns chaotic. Stefan learns from Damon that they will have to confront something new and awful.

It’s the “1960s Decade Dance” at Mystic Falls High School, but Elena’s preoccupied by the disquieting messages Klaus is sending through an unusual source. A concerned Jeremy goes to Stefan for help, despite Bonnie’s assurances that she’s strong enough to help out Elena. Matt is convinced by Caroline to attend the dance, where chaperones Alaric and Damon expect Klaus to show. But Klaus’ game keeps guessing, and everyone is distressed by Damon’s new plan.
John lands on both Elena’s and Alaric’s lists when Isobel’s visit upsets Jenna. Bonnie, Damon, and Jeremy look for a spell that will allow her to tap into her ancestors’ power.
