The Voice 2013 Live Recap: Battle Rounds Part Deux! (4/16/2013)

Now that we already have one episode of battle rounds under our belts on The Voice 2013, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the epic duets in tonight’s one-hour episode. Coaches Shakira, Adam Levine, Usher, and Blake Shelton still have to go through the painful process of eliminating the losing contestants following their battle round performances.

Fortunately, this season there are exciting “steals” that will save some contestants from musical doom. Each coach gets two steals throughout the battles so we hope they’ll make them count! Shakira used up both of her steals in the first episode of battle rounds, snagging R&B singer Sasha Allen and rocker Karina Iglesias.

Who will make it through? Read on!

Warren Stone vs. Michael Austin

Hoping to move forward with only one country artist, Adam Levine pitted his two honky tonkers against one another. Firefighter Warren Stone and sheriff Michael Austin decided to duke it out in a battle of the first responders.

Adam viewed this battle as just as much of a challenge for him, having never worked with a country artist before, but he was determined to think outside the box.

Michael had an extra challenge that he told his coach about — he’d recently had a tumor removed from his nasal passage. This surgery changed his sound and he essentially had to relearn how to sing. Warren battled his own nerves, but wanted to prove to his kids that he could put his best cowboy boot forward.

Singing Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party,” the boys took their plaid shirts and jeans to the stage to rock out to the tune. The song wasn’t necessarily the best choice for these two, but we’ll cut Adam some slack on his first attempt.

Blake Shelton described the experience like watching a “wrestling match” saying he’d pick Michael’s rough-around-the-edges style over Warren’s smooth tone. But Adam thought the diversity of Warren’s sound would be his best bet moving forward and picked the firefighter.

Jeff Lewis vs. Josiah Hawley

Usher decided to pair two of his most dashing dudes for the next battle — Jeff Lewis and Josiah Hawley. Unfortunately, these two pretty boys struggled in the music department. Team Ush’s mentor, Pharrell Williams, gave the boys some prostitute backstory into the lyrics, but it didn’t seem help their performance when Jeff flubbed the lyrics in rehearsal.

Usher was none too pleased when Jeff laughed off the mistake and quickly put him in line. Sigh, if only he could get The Biebs in line this way.

With his friends and wife (yes, she’s real) cheering him on, former model Josiah took to the stage in a blazer with a popped collar and extra tight pants. But apart from looks, we couldn’t really tell a difference between Josiah and Jeff. Blake Shelton disagreed, saying vocally he’d give the win to Jeff.

Usher decided to go with the total package and picked Josiah to move forward.

Sadly, NBC opted to put three seemingly exciting battles into a one-minute montage. First was Tennessee native Grace Askew who went up against pop singer Trevor Davis singing Janis Joplin’s “Me & Bobby McGee.” Not surprisingly, Blake picked “badass” Grace and her one-of-a-kind style. Then Usher paired sassy Audrey Karrasch against soulful Jamila Thompson on Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy.” Though Jamila sang Beyonce for her blind audition, Ush picked Audrey. Finally Shakira pitted twang-happy Tawnya Reynolds and laidback performer Mark Andrew on Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” Embracing her girl power side, Shakira picked Tawnya.

Danielle Bradbery vs. Caroline Glaser

Blake Shelton decided there was only room for one sugary sweet teen on his team so he pitted country-singing teen Danielle against coffeehouse songbird Caroline on Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On.”

Both timid ladies struggled to impress their coach, braiding their hair and practicing like crazy. And when it came time for their battle round, they blew us away!

Caroline took a more stylized approach to the tune, while Danielle’s powerful voice seemed to lead the song.

“You performance was as refreshing as tangerine ice cream,” Shakira told the girls.

And Adam had the biggest compliments for Caroline. Kicking himself for not noticing the coffeehouse artist’s talent during the blind auditions, Adam told her that he couldn’t have been more impressed by her sound.

Blake ultimately picked Danielle, but Adam’s newfound realization led him to press his button for a steal, as did Usher.

Adam reduced Caroline to tears with his sweet words, and Usher tried his best to “borrow” from Adam’s tactics to woo the soulful singer. Tapping into her emotional response to his kind words, Caroline picked Team Adam.
