The Voice 2013 Live Recap: Blind Auditions Are No Joke! (4/1/2013)
It’s April 1, but pranks will have to wait because The Voice 2013 Season 4 is brand new and the contestants are more determined than ever to show America that they’re the next star.
And with celebrity coaches like Adam Levine, Shakira, Blake Shelton, and Usher, it’s no wonder that The Voice is the top reality show in the country right now. The mixture of seasoned mentors and newbies has proven to be an exciting combination, and we’re looking forward to seeing these four interact even more at the season goes on.
Let’s get started:
The Swon Brothers
Up first was some brotherly love from country duo The Swon Brothers. These boys showed off some killer mullets in home videos and tried to show America just how “quirky” they could be. While some kids wanted to go to Disney World, these boys wanted to stop in Nashville and snag a record deal. Poor Goofy.
The siblings took to the stage to sing Tom Petty’s “American Girl.” The performance inspired Blake Shelton, Shakira, and Usher to press their buttons and Carson Daly to play the air drums backstage. We’re so excited to share their “Swoncert” with America, and Blake Shelton tried to convince them that by the end of the show they would be able to say that they had “S-won.” So many puns, so little time.
Apparently these boys like jokes, especially when they come from Oklahoma. They landed on Team Blake.
Next was the soft-spoken girl with the vibrant red hair. This little lady went from training to be an Olympic gymnast to training to be the next pop superstar. With a tearful mother and family supporting this flexible contestant, Taylor took to the stage to try her hand at Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Goin’ Down.”
R&B superstar Usher turned almost immediately with Shakira following suit soon after. Ush was excited to turn for a contestant who truly loves R&B and put everything he could into convincing Taylor to join his team. Hell, he even put his leg down.
Calling it an “honor,” Taylor quickly joined Team Ush. And the triple threat proceeded to moonwalk in front of the three remaining coaches.
Curly-haired cutie Sam Alves was up next to try and beat the odds. His birth parents had left him in a box on the steps of strangers’ house when he was just a baby. Luckily, those strangers picked him up and raised him.
But his luck didn’t transmit to The Voice stage when his performance of Michael Buble’s “Feeling Good” failed to earn him a single button press. But Shakira offered Sam some kind words in Portuguese, much to the excitement of Adam Levine.
Contestants come to The Voice at every level of music careers. Karina Iglesias, a music teacher from Miami, Fla., was looking to be the next student from one of the celebrity coaches.
Trying to make her musical grandmother proud, Karina took to The Voice stage to rock out to Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m the Only One.” In a dramatic blind audition, Blake and Adam pushed their buttons on the very last note.
“That was the most stressful thing I have ever gone through in my entire life,” Adam said. Umm, excuse us? It was stressful to you, Adam?! Poor Karina was on stage stressing rock bullets.
But Adam wasn’t the only coach sweating. Shakira admitted she was completely conflicted about not pressing her button, but Adam quieted her saying “Shut up!” in Spanish. Adam’s determination to snag this rocker ended up landing her a spot on Team Adam.
Adam tried giving Blake Shelton a hug to apologize for stealing another contestant, but Blake’s embrace was a bit too close for the tattooed rocker. Theirs truly is the bromance to end all bromances.
The Voice is the perfect place for second and third chances, a fact that returning contestant Garrett Gardner takes seriously. He’s back to re-audition after failing to get a button push from one of the four celebrity coaches.
Garrett’s ready to show America what he’s been working on between seasons. And it looks like his efforts have finally paid off! His creative, toned-down rendition of “Seven Nation Army” earned him a push from Shakira.
And it seems that Garrett is on the perfect team. Shakira even remembered his audition from before she was on the show saying she was “so pissed” that the others didn’t pick him.
“You’re stuck with me. I’m sorry,” Shakira told Garrett.
“Don’t be sorry! Thank you so much!” he exclaimed.
Here lies the most grateful member of Team Shak! Team Garrett!
And it seems Shakira was on a roll snagging soul singer J’Sunwhile Adam picked up guitar-playing singer Duncan Kamakana, while Usher beat Blake for pop singer Chelsea M.
Up next was alto saxaphone player Holly Tucker. This country crooner was ready to show what she sounded like outside of her band uniform. And within seconds, all four coaches had turned for her.
Singing Adele, a typically taboo artist in the audition world, Holly blew the coaches away.
“This show is all about making the right moves and you really do want to have the coach that will support your growth,” Usher said, trying to keep Holly's cowboy boots out of Team Blake.
Adam and Shakira tried their best to convince Holly to make the unusual decision and stay away from Team Blake. But Mr. Shelton comforted Holly, saying her country sound only belonged in one place.
She agreed and landed on Team Blake.
This professional mover was looking to move the coaches with his blind audition, which surprisingly was also his first major performance.
But his raspiness on James Morrison’s “You Give Me Something” wasn’t enough to inspire the coaches to press their buttons.
Usher and Blake admitted that they thought he was a woman, but Adam told him not to take it seriously. Adam said he felt like Landon was fighting too hard to sound like James Morrison, and that he wanted to hear more of his signature sound.
Hopefully he’ll put down the boxes and pick up some voice lessons to re-audition for Season 5.
This awkward, shy singer is ready to express herself through her music. After singing in a band for a few years, Michelle was nervous to hit The Voice stage solo.
Michelle’s performance of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” quickly changed tempo from slow to rocker-chic. And her quirky audition inspired Adam Levine, Shakira, and Usher to turn for her.
The singer had some questions for the celebs in order to make an informed decision. Ultimately, it was Usher who had all the right answers, and Michelle joined Team Ush.
This blonde bombshell knows what it’s like to be a recording artist. Julie already released one gold album, but after failing to impress her record label with the second album, she was dropped.
Soon after Julie lost the record deal, her family lost her house and she was diagnosed with MS. Unfortunately, the bad news didn’t stop there, and Julie failed to get a button push while singing Blake’s “God Gave Me You.”
This Cuban star performed on a Spanish show as a child, but since it ended, she hasn’t gotten the chance to pursue her passion of singing.
Monique became the first Voice contestant to sing a Shakira song, inspiring a four-chair turn. The coaches seemed convinced that Monique would pick Shakira no matter what, but they each gave their two cents.
In the end, all of the remaining coaches raised their hands saying she should pick Shakira. And Monique listened to them, landing on her idol’s team.
This Southern firefighter had put his career on hold to be a career man and full-time dad. But Warren Stone wanted a second chance at his dream, and that’s exactly what The Voice is all about. Singing Zac Brown Band’s “Colder Weather,” Warren convinced Adam, Shakira, and, finally, Blake to turn.
“I’m just so ignited by what you’ve just done. I know you’re going to be a huge country star,” Adam said.
Blake wasn’t giving up the chase that easily, noting, for those who have forgotten, that he actually was a star in the country community and complimenting Warren’s “ease” and effortless talent.
Adam continued to beg for the star saying he was “on the chopping block,” dying for Warren to be on his team. And Warren shocked the other coaches by saving Adam’s limbs from the chopping block and joining his team.
