The Voice 2013: Why Midas Whale Could Win Season 4!
Pick up your banjos and suspenders because folk music is back and better than ever! Naturally, America’s favorite reality music competition, The Voice, is capitalizing on this resurgence of folk and already has duo Midas Whale locked in to Team Adam.
Made up of funny men Ryan Hayes and Jon Peter Lewis, Midas Whale is a newly-formed folk duo who has already likened themselves to now-mainstream group Mumford and Sons. Their cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” earned the duo a four-chair turn in the blind auditions with Adam Levine claiming that they were a “real duo.”
That statement’s pretty interesting considering American Idol alum Jon Peter Lewis recently told Wetpaint Entertainment that they haven’t been together for more than a couple years.
But, surprisingly, these two have hit the reality competition scene at the perfect time. In addition to Mumford and Sons, groups like The Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men have gained massive followings promoting the acoustic, folk sound.
So hearing this same style coming out of The Voice stage, audiences could easily flock to Midas Whale. Not to mention these boys have charm and humor that can’t be denied. Their comedy was a refreshing break from the endless blind audition sob stories.
It’s clear that America’s interest has already been piqued. Before their blind audition aired, the group had fewer than 20 Twitter followers. By the end of the night they were up to more than 4,000. Less than a week after their blind audition aired, the duo is closing in on 6,000 followers and undoubtedly even more social media-less fans.
The only potential snag we see for these two is the upcoming battle rounds. Wetpaint Entertainment recently spoke with Season 2 sibling duo The Shields Brothers who were eliminated in a battle round against eclectic artist Erin Martin.
“The battles are really hard for duos because you’re already singing a duet all the time anyway so then to add a third person, it gets weird,” Tristan Shields told us.
And considering Midas Whale is drastically different from any contestant we’ve seen thus far, they could face a major challenge going into the battles.
But hopefully Adam (or another coach’s steal) will save the duo from being eliminated too soon.
