Quirky pop rocker Michelle Chamuel has been one of this season’s biggest surprises on The Voice 2013. The Team Usher artist has become an inspiration to many fans and has grown into her own throughout her time on the show.
Now she’s made it all the way to the Season 4 finale and no one’s more shocked than she is. Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the singer on the red carpet following her final live show performances where she talked about her journey thus far.
Wetpaint Entertainment: What are you most proud of from this whole experience?
Michelle Chamuel: I think the fact that I am still standing here in front of all of your guys and have not completely ripped out all of my hair. And just focusing on the moment is something I’ve been trying to really do and I’m really happy that I’m doing it in some way, shape or form.
What did it mean to have Usher do that duet with your tonight?
It was a really cool moment for me – like a break in the show. Getting to sing with a friend. The Top 16 moment was like, “Cool. Here we are taking a breather from that whole pressure pressure aspect” and doing that felt the same way to me.
Was that your family sitting behind the coaches?
Yeah those were two members of my family.
They were going nuts the whole time.
They are awesome. I have a great family.
What was it like to sing in a mirror? You kind of freaked Blake out a little bit.
That was a cool artistic direction that the team took and I was really happy to learn how to do that. I had never done anything like that. It felt more like acting. It was cool.
Do you feel more confident now at this point in the competition?
Confident is something – I don’t even fully know how to define confidence. The way it’s being used is that I haven’t been pushed too far away from my censor. It’s a process to figure out who you are and to stick to those guns and say, “This is how I want to do it and I’m going to do it my way even if that may not be the way that other people think is best.”
What was the one moment that stood out to you from this whole competition that you’ll always look back on?
I think it’s a lot of stuff that happens behind the scenes. The amount of people that the contestants get to interact with and the amount of people that it takes to get the show to run – to really see all those moving parts and feel in a way supported by them and able to support them has been a really cool experience.
Did Usher get along with your mom?
Oh yeah. She's like, "He's great"! And he's like, "She's great!"
And he wore his glasses which was cute … to fit in.
Total member of the family.
What did you feel was your defining moment of tonight? You're defining performance?
I wouldn't know how to describe it. Annie Lennox? That I think was the most different thing that I've done.
