Stephanie Anne Johnson Sings “Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones and Tamara Chauniece Sings “No One” by Alicia Keys
On October 29, Team Cee Lo Green powerhouse vocalists Stephanie Anne Johnson and Tamara Chauniece were paired to sing against one another on The Voice 2013 knockout rounds. Stephanie came to the stage with her acoustic rendition of “Don’t Know Why” by Norah Jones. Steph chose the song as she wants to sing songs along the lines of Bonnie Raitt and “sound the way soul food tastes.” Armed with a guitar in hand, the singer gave her powerful yet sweet cover.
Tamara followed Stephanie with her reggae rendition of “No One” by Alicia Keys. Wanting to give the song a fresh laid-back vibe, Tamara chose to change the arrangements for a more island feel, however, knew that her stage presence had to match the song.
After both ladies sang, Adam Levine said that he loved that Stephanie’s song choice said alot about her as a musician, but at times it felt unfocused, whereas Tamra’s reggae version was cool and she continued to improve in the competition. Blake Shelton raved about Tamara’s performance, while Christina Aguilera was blown away by both singers’ accuracy and precision. Cee Lo thought that Tamara had impressive control over her song, while Stephanie sang through her nerves. Based solely on tonight’s performance, however, Cee Lo chose Tamara. But that wouldn’t be the end for Stephanie — using her steal for the round, Christina nabbed her former team member for Team Xtina in the live shows.
