The Voice went for a jovial mood on last night’s episode, with the majority of songs performed being holiday ditties. In the end, though, there’s no getting around the fact that one person had to go home, and that person was the well-loved Matthew Schuler.

His somewhat shocking departure left Christina Aguilera with one remaining contestant (Jacquie Lee) and Blake Shelton with one remaining hopeful (Cole Vosbury). People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” Adam Levine, remains unscathed, however, with all three of his singers (Will Champlin, Tessanne Chin, and James Wolpert) making it through to the next round.

Perhaps Matthew’s exit wasn’t all that surprising, though. He was the recipient of the Twitter Instant Save last week, and in the four weeks the show has enlisted this new twist, the person to get saved has gone home the following week. It is surprising, however, when one considers Matthew’s previous popularity with voters, and the fact that his standout performance of “Hallelujah” a few weeks back still resides on the iTunes chart right now.

The coaches’ input could have certainly played a factor. Adam pulled out the big guns by reminding everyone that James was sick during his performances (boo freaking hoo, some Matthew fans might say). Not only that, but the Maroon 5 frontman called him “one of the best singers I’ve ever been in a room with.” That’s some high praise to be sure. Christina attempted her own bit of persuasion, reminding everyone that Matthew had the fastest four-chair turn in the history of the competition.

Adam’s praise may have had more sway, but there’s no way to really know that for sure. One thing that is set in stone is the fact that James will be the last artist to benefit from the Instant Twitter Save this season, according to Carson Daly.

James lived to see another day but, with two artists going home next week, we can only wonder whether he will suffer the same fate as Matthew.
