The Voice coach Christina Aguilera gushed over her remaining Team Xtina contestant this week, saying that Jacquie Lee’s “heart is gold” and that she wants to shield the16-year-old singer from the harshness of the music industry. Fast forward to last night’s show and it seemed that Xtina may have let down her protégée just a wee bit during their duet of “We Remain” off The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack.
While both of their voices are undeniably amazing, the vocal powerhouses couldn’t seem to get their harmonies just right. The visual imagery in the background was stunning, their fiery red dresses were breathtaking, and the song carried just the right amount of significance for such a big night. That said, when the dueling divas tried to come together it almost seemed to fall a little flat. And, while we aren’t voice coaches, it sounded to use like it was the seasoned vet Xtina that was struggling to get the harmonies in check. There were some beautiful moments, however, and the mutual admiration between the singers was palpable.
Christina also performed a group number with her fellow coaches. The foursome took on the popular 80s song “Pour Some Sugar On Me” with Def Leppard band members Rick Allen, Phil Collen, and Vivian Campbell. Overall, we thought they sounded pretty decent together but, in order to think that, you had to put aside the general schmaltziness of the song. Christina sounded good, although we didn’t think her part really lent itself to the best parts of her vocal range.
