For the most part, it seems that The Voice coaches and contestants are in perfect harmony when it comes to song choices but, if you’re like us, you may wonder if that’s always *really* the case. Parade had a chance to talk with Will Champlin –– who came in third when Season 5 came to an end this week –– and he admitted that he had a few disagreements with coach Adam Levine on picking songs.
“I fought really hard to change a few song choices. I spoke up when I needed to speak up. I went back to the drawing board with Adam,” the son of Chicago band member Bill Champlin said when asked if he would change anything.
“I gave my honest thoughts, he gave his honest thoughts, too. We tried out other things for the finale and he even said ‘nah, these aren’t working, they aren’t big enough’ and I was like, ‘yeah, you know, you’re right, this is the finale.’”
One might think that Adam would pull rank but Will said he was able to get a few song choices changed, and it was because he wanted to come across as authentic.
“I think I definitely had to disagree with some song choices that were made. I got one or two changed. I just wanted to keep consistent and keep true to America and not seem contrived. I didn’t want to seem contrived at all with any song choice that might be a detriment to my journey on The Voice,” Will said.
One of the numbers Will admits wasn’t his first choice was “Secrets”, but he told Parade that he enjoyed the process of making it his own with Adam’s guidance, and that it was a bit of a turning point for the pair.
“When we were working on my version of [‘Secrets’],I was surprised about that song choice, because it wasn’t my first choice to be honest with you. I said, ‘This is how I would do this song’ and I just got into my artistic zone and he was really impressed. That was one of the best moments, I think, coming into the live [shows]. I think he enjoyed it, too.”
