If you were hoping to start out the New Year with a cringe-worthy and awkward TV moment of epic proportions, we give you the much-hyped Rose Bowl parade float that held The Voice winner Tessanne Chin and fellow finalists Jacquie Lee and Will Champlin. There were quite a few technical difficulties but that’s understandable. Some might even say those are forgivable. But the play-by-play commentary, or lack thereof, by NBC’s Hoda Kotb and Al Roker was downright embarrassing.

The two are apparently not fans of the show, as they initially didn’t even realize Jacquie and Will were finalists. In the video posted on Yahoo!, they barely acknowledge them, except when Hoda Kotb mistakenly thought Will was Adam Levine. Adding insult to injury, Al called him an “Adam wannabe” and an “Adam lookalike.”

Later on in the video, someone had finally made them aware that the two others on the float with Tessanne weren’t just pillow fluffers or personal assistants but, rather, finalists on the show. What was worse is no one ever got them the actual info, so they never even mention them by name. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

The two announcers skillfully tried to waste time by talking Tessanne up during the tech issues, saying things like, “She is loving this” and “She’s got the wave down.” Hoda gave us a “that’s what she said moment,” by saying, “I can’t believe how big it is” in reference to the actual float.

At 3:03, Hoda said, “The lovely young lady next to her [Tessanne] and the young man next to her — they were all finalists on The Voice and any one of them could have been the winner, so it’s terrific to see them all together.”

“I’m glad she’s saving her voice,” Al continued to joke about Tessanne during the painstakingly brutal period in which the three singers had to repeatedly wave in lieu of singing. Finally, Tessanne got to sing about 30-40 seconds of her debut single, “Tumbling Down,” while the “others” sang a bit of background vocals. Hey, NBC — we just have one word for you: Wikipedia. Learn it. Live it. Love it.

On the bright side, the float was gorgeous and Tessanne did sound amazing for that brief period. It’s our New Year’s resolution to see the silver lining, k?
