A former contestant on The Voice Mexico was found dead in Veracruz, Mexico, on January 18. Twenty-two-year-old Gibran David Martiz Diaz had been missing since January 7, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Armed gunman dressed as police officers kidnapped Gibran at his Veracruz home more than two weeks ago. His body and that of an unidentified minor were discovered over the weekend after a shootout between the suspected kidnappers and security forces. Two suspects died in the confrontation with Gibran and the minor reportedly killed before the firefight, reports THR.
Gibran rose to prominence during the third season of Televisa-produced La Voz... México, the country’s take on the NBC version. His coaches on the show, Puerto Rican duo Wisin & Yandel, shared their thoughts on Gibran’s tragic death via Twitter.
“Our most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Gibran. May God keep you in his glory,” they wrote in Spanish (translation by THR).
Gibran’s Facebook has become a memorial of sorts as his fans share their memories of the young singer. On January 14, his family used the site as a way to rally supporters while Gibran was missing and thanked the authorities for their support throughout the search.
