If you thought the idea of Blind Auditions put a spin on the singing competition format, you’re in for a real treat when you hear about with The Voice creator John de Mol has planned for his latest reality TV venture. The creative genius is producing Utopia, a Lord Of The Flies-type reality show, to be aired on Fox.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show, which was a ratings juggernaut for its first run in The Netherlands, puts contestants in a remote setting for a whole year. During this time, they are poised to start their own civilization with no power structure, limited amenities, and no outside intervention. Take that, Jeff Probst!

Utopia will be the largest, most ambitious social experiment on television, and I’m thrilled that Talpa Media USA has chosen Fox as its U.S. broadcast partner,” said Fox EVP of alternative entertainment Simon Andreae. “The series offers people from all walks of life the chance to start all over again and rewrite the rules of civilization as we know it. It addresses fascinating and fundamental questions about human law, morality and social structures, wrapped in an irresistible and truly forward-thinking television format.”

One might assume this kind of time commitment might be a hindrance to many folks but John said over 5,500 answered the casting call for the inaugural season in the U.S. However casting for this particular show involves far different goals than with most reality shows.

"The casting process is a little more difficult than other regular reality shows because normally you only look at characters," he said. "In this case, you also have to look at skills. In order to give them a fair chance to survive, you need skills."

They’re calling it a “multiplatform concept,” because, in addition to the episodes on TV, life in Utopia will be aired online 24-7.

John thinks the most intriguing part for us viewers will be the inevitability of us wondering what we would do under the same circumstances the “pioneers” face.

“The key questions Utopia asks are ‘Are people able to create an ideal society from scratch? And will it be ultimate happiness or complete chaos?’ What makes this even more interesting to watch, both on television and online, is the question that viewers undoubtedly will ask themselves, ‘What would I do?’” he said.

We don’t know about you but we’ll definitely be watching this when it airs. What do you think of this concept? Sound off in the comments!
