With the big premiere of season six of The Voice just around the corner on February 24, affable host Carson Daly sat down for Entertainment Weekly with Shakira, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Usher to get the scoop on past contestants and whether they are looking for the next Lorde.

In reference to finding a contestant like Lorde — who is certainly the woman of the hour in music these days — Shakira says she’s “specifically looking for young females this time around.” The sexy Latin singer said it simply makes sense, since it’s her area of expertise, and she’d like to share her musical knowledge. But regardless of age or gender, Shakira is most looking for singers with “drive,” “determination,” and “chemistry.”

The coaches also talked fondly about their past contestants. Unlike American Idol, none of these folks are contractually obligated to help launch their mentees’ careers — yet they still do what they can.

For example, Blake and his wife Miranda Lambert campaigned for The Swon Brothers to get their contract with Sony “out of passion” for the duo’s talent. Adam signed Christina’s former Mickey Mouse Club co-star Tony Lucca to his label and says he and the other coaches take their former team members out on tour with them whenever they can. Meanwhile, Usher says he’s “keeping tabs” on Josiah Hawley and Michelle Chamuel.

When asked whether they see themselves in some of these hopefuls, Adam said he sees himself in all of them, because everyone has to start somewhere.  “We all understand what the process of becoming an artist is.”
