On March 3, 33-year-old singer Ryan Whyte Maloney took The Voice stage to belt out his acoustic rendition of “Lights” by Journey. Ryan’s motivation for the The Voice including making a better life for his two children, and he wants to be “a better dad.” The Michigan native received an immediate two-chair turn from coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, followed close behind by Shakira.

At the very last second, Usher pushed his button causing all four coaches to vie for the singer. Usher was first to make his pitch, telling Ryan that he waited until the very end to see if he would continue to work in order to receive that last chair turn. Moments later Adam complimented the singer’s “high” voice, and even compared him to Journey’s former lead singer, Steve Perry. Coach Blake told Ryan that he sounded completely unique, while Shakira told him that from the moment she heard him, she was captivated.

After all four coaches made their pitches, Ryan decided to go with Team Blake.
