On March 10, singer Ria Eaton took The Voice stage to belt out “Cups (When I’m Gone)” by Anna Kendricks. The 19-year-old singer veered a different path from her mother, who was a classically trained dancer. About 5 years ago, Ria’s father lost his job and with that, Ria had to make several sacrifices (including vocal training) in order to help the family make ends meet. To Ria, being on The Voice is a much-needed life change.

Trying to out-psych each other, coaches Shakira and Blake Shelton both pushed their buttons at the absolute last second. Blake started out by saying he thought the singer opened up more and showcased her talent when it looked like she wasn’t going to make it on the show, with Shakira agreeing.

Shakira noted that Ria had a few issues in the beginning of the song, but ultimately brought out the rasp. Comparing Ria to an pearl in an oyster, Shakira promised that as her coach she would pry open the oyster, and polish the pearl to show the world how much of a jewel she is.

Though Ria called the decision pretty tough, she chose Blake as her coach.
