On March 17, Team Shakira singers Dani Moz and DeShawn Washington belted out a duet to “My Kind of Love” by Emeli Sandé. Shakira paired the singers together because she thought it would be interesting to hear Dani’s pop sound against DeShawn’s old school vocals.

During rehearsals, Shakira praised DeShawn for his gritty, raspy sound. Meanwhile, mentor Miranda Lambert complimented Dani Moz on knowing what works for her stylistically. While DeShawn was pretty confident that he would be able to pull off the soulful song, Dani was advised to “open up her chest” and work on her lower register.

On the final night of rehearsals, both singers brought their powerful vocals, however, they began to step over one another. Miranda and Shakira advised them both to not outsing each other, and urged DeShawn to keep with the melody of the song. Both singers took the stage with the Emeli Sandé song, bringing a smile to coach Usher’s face. Adam Levine called the battle “awesome,” complimenting their great energy, movement, and ability to capture the audience. Adam wasn’t able to choose a winner, while Blake Shelton noted that DeShawn surprised him during their battle. Usher told Dani that she understood the emotional need of the song, but told DeShawn “big things come in small packages” and called him her victor.

Shakira told DeShawn that she had a weakness for his “unique timbre,” but noted that Dani had grown so much in such little time. After much consideration, Shakira decided to go with Dani, and expressed sincere remorse in having to see Deshawn leave.
