The Voice Season 6 contestant Music Box flew under the radar during the Blind Auditions — which is no small feat when you have a name like Music Box. In fact, the only reason most people missed it is because she was tucked into one of the montages with two other artists.

However, Twitter erupted during the third night of Battle Rounds when her duet with fellow Team Shakira singer Deja Hall was announced. “Is that her real name?” asked thousands of viewers. Well, we guess you could debate for hours whether your true name is the one you’re given or the one you give yourself. But to answer that question a different way, it’s definitely not the name on her birth certificate.

Music Box was born Ayesha Brooks, but says her struggle with stage fright led her to adopt an alter ego at the age of 18. “I feel like the name ‘Music Box’ sort of chose me,” she explained in a media conference call. “I feel like the music lives within me and I can relate to a music box.”

The pseudonym has obviously helped her overcome her stage fright, with a powerful performance in the Battle Rounds. Although Shakira did not choose to keep Music Box on her team, coach Usher exercised one of his steals to take the Seattle singer under his wing.
