On March 25, Team Shakira singers Cierra Mickens and Emily B. belted out a duet to “Brave” by Sara Bareilles. Emily, having survived a serious brain tumor, had no problem finding an emotional connection to the song, but struggled with volume issues. Meanwhile, Cierra had problems with pitch and making the song her own.

With further rehearsals, Shakira honed in on Cierra’s embellishments and advised Emily to sustain her notes more and make sure she wasn’t just shouting the song.

The two soulful singers sand with intensity, though they lost the pocket a bit at the end. Adam noted that the battle started strong, and ultimately felt Cierra had the strong performance. Blake, however, felt he’d probably choose Emily. Usher, with the only remaining steal, played his cards close to his (very muscular) chest.

With no majority in favor of either singer, Shakira chose Emily B. to stay on her team. Though Cierra is saying goodbye to her coach, she won’t be leaving the competition. Usher politely let Cierra say her thanks and almost let her walk off the stage entirely before slamming his “Steal” button.

Usher may have played it cool, but he made it clear he always intended to hit his button for the talented law student. “God blessed you with an incredible talent,” he said, adding that he looks forward to picking up where Shak left off.
