Music Box and Melissa Jimenez Sing “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys

On April 7, Team Usher singers Music Box and Melissa Jimenez belted out a duet to “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys. Usher decided to pair the two R&B singers together with the hopes that they would be able to push one another to up the ante on their performance.

After taking a moment for figure out which song both appealed to their vocals, the ladies settled on “Girl on Fire” because of the potential for belting. During rehearsals, Usher felt that the song played to both Melissa and Music’s strengths. Mentor Chris Martin advised both ladies to take ownership of the song and make it their own without forcing themselves to sound too much like songwriter Alicia. Usher added on by telling the ladies if he wanted to hear Alicia, he’d play the song — instead, he wants to hear their interpretation of the hit record.

On the night of battles, both Melissa and Music took the stage with the power anthem. Shakira thought the battle had great and not-so-great moments, but gave her vote Music. Adam Levine said that it appeared that both ladies wanted to do more, but overall, Melissa had more good moments than Music. Blake Shelton thought that both ladies did a well enough job with Melissa’s sweetness and Music’s energy, however, he gave the battle to Music. Coach Usher told the ladies that he felt their battle was the moment to put their best foot forward and leave it all out on the stage. When it was time for Usher to choose a singer, he went with the performer he thought could go very far with his guidance, which was Melissa.
