On May 12, Team Adam Levine singer Christina Grimmie gave a rousing performance of “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap. Adam told Christina that people love her fearless and bold choices, and because of this, Adam chose the Imogen Heap song because it’s daring — like Christina. As if the song wasn’t already challenging, Adam also added a new instrument, the vocoder, which essentially forces Christina to harmonize with herself. Christina realized that she and her coach were taking a pretty big risk, but the internet sensation took on the challenge… and succeeded.

Usher told the singer that he had to recognize how much of a great vocalist she was. He critiqued that he did not feel a connection between Christina and the song in the beginning when she used the vocoder, but he was able to enjoy it better when she sang without it. Shakira told Christina that it was huge risk to sing with the vocoder, but that she does believe the 20-year-old internet sensation is a star and that she’s rooting for her (especially because they are both little people).

Adam said that he thought Christina did an awesome job with the challenge that he set before her. And while most of the critiques towards Christina were mostly because of their decision to use a vocoder in her performance, he (speaking for himself and his team) wanted to inject something new for the audience to hear and possibly love instead of just making the competition a contest of karaoke singers. For this, Adam is unapologetic, and stands behind his artists, and Christina’s innovative performance.
